Deepwater Horizon Oil Drilling Spill

IMPACT ON VACATION RENTALS
Updated 07/09/2010 4:02 PM EDT

The Deepwater Horizon Oil Drilling Spill could potentially have a catastrophic impact on members of the Florida Vacation Rental Managers Association.

While there has been no impact to Florida's tidal shoreline as of today, cancellations are being received by our members, especially in the Gulf Shores, Alabama and Panhandle regions. Many of our members are alerting their guests that cancellation penalties are being waived/or significantly lowered but are urging them to maintain their reservations right now as there would be no disruption in their anticipated vacation. As news continues to raise the alarm about a potential impact from the spill, we have taken steps to enable our members to get the facts and not react out of fear or misinformation.

FVRMA’s goal is to provide you, our members, with links and sites to obtain the latest credible information for your utilization: many of these are governmental and/or scientific in nature, but we are also providing the names of credible law firms that are taking the lead in filing class action suits due to rental disruptions.

Our Partner, VISIT FLORIDA has put in place a communication platform to provide consumers with information from the most credible sources – official information from the State of Florida and information direct from local destinations. At present, these status updates communicate that our destinations are clear and open for business. The same platform will also provide the most current local information should the situation worsen.

FVRMA is hosting a Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill Update page on www.fvrma.org which provides members with real-time information on the status of all Florida destinations. Lawsuits: Please know that class action law suits have already begun to be filed. As Class Action Suits develop, many smaller law firms will sign on a client and then refer them to the larger firms that have been sanctioned to handle these major cases. Rumrell Law, Cunningham Bounds out of Mobile, Alabama and Merlin Law Group are three of the top firms who will be handling the prime suits. Please be sure to reference them for additional information as they have excellent information on their web sites as well.

Please know that we will continue working to develop the most effective response to this evolving situation. If you have a site link to be posted – let us know.
